The Day In a Life of Bug at Inn by the Sea
Whimsical Hotel Program Educates Kids About Eco systems
April 10, 2010……..Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Dress like a bug, visit a certified Butterfly way station and butterfly hotel and learn about eco systems from a bug’s viewpoint- all part of the kid’s “Bug’s Life” program at the eco- luxury Inn by the Sea on Crescent Beach in Maine. The inn donates part of the savings from their sheet and reuse program to Alternare in the Mexican biosphere and other environmental agencies, and engages guests with education on protecting the environment with whimsical seminars and classes.
Kids at Inn by the Sea uncover the secrets of bug life and learn to be good citizens of the earth during the summer vacation months. Head Gardener Derrick Daly will have a variety of creepy crawlers to examine up close to teach kids the importance of the good the bad and the ugly in a bug’s world. Children learn how some of the truly creepy critters in a garden are beneficial not only to the health of a garden but impact the surrounding eco system as well.
Participants create their own bug costumes and learn the ins and outs of an eco system from an insect’s viewpoint. Daly shows youngsters what kind of plants local animals prefer to chomp on, and in which plants animals choose to make their homes. They even discover the value of yucky bugs that thrive in the warmth of the Inn’s compost pile!
Inn by The Sea grounds are certified as Backyard Wildlife Habitat, a Butterfly waystation and adjacent to a bird sanctuary. Many of the plants have been put in to create food and shelter for small creatures. Information on how to can create your own butterfly waystation or backyard habitat for wildlife is on hand at the seminars.
“Appreciating how we impact our surroundings and developing a sensitivity to the environment can be really fun for children, and builds awareness,” according to Daly. “It’s never too early to start.”
