A Giving Tree- Inn by the Sea partners with G.R.A.C.E. & local schools to collect clothing and school books

12/03/2012

Cape Elizabeth Maine….November 18, 2012 . From Thanksgiving through New Year’s a creatively decorated Giving Tree brightens the fireplace lounge at Inn by the Sea, trimmed with paper decorations made by local students.

Inn guests and the community are invited to exchange warm mittens, scarves, hats or Chap Stick for the students’ handmade ornaments to help less fortunate neighbors.  Visitors may also buy $10 bookmarks decorated by Dyer and Kaler Elementary School students to purchase school books from a list provided by teachers for their schools' reading program.

In appreciation for the generous exchange, Inn by the Sea will issue a $20 gift certificate* to each donor, valid in the SPA or Sea Glass at Inn by the Sea January 2 through June 14, 2013.

The warm clothes collected are distributed locally to food banks, schools, and Preble Street Chapel by project G.R.A.C.E. (Granting Resources and Assistance through Community Effort), a Scarborough based agency that provides assistance to residents of Southern Maine.

State Representative Jane Eberle has worked for several years  to  team Inn by the Sea with students from Memorial  Middle Schools' REACH and Connections programs, 3rd grade at Brown Elementary School, and South Portland High School Interact Club  to create handmade holiday ornaments.

The inviting book marks are colorfully crafted around book themes, and 100% of the proceeds from the $10 bookmarks purchased by guests go to purchase school books. In 2010 and 2011 Inn by the Sea sold enough bookmarks to purchase 150 school books.

“The staff and guests at Inn by the Sea appreciate this opportunity to work with State Representative Jane Eberle, Project G.R.A.C.E. and local students during the holiday season,” stated Sara Masterson, General Manger at Inn by the Sea. “Our guests really enjoy giving back to the region where they vacation, in such a personal way. “
