Cape Elizabeth Maine….December 2, 2013. Handmade paper decorations, created by local school children, decorate a Giving Tree at Inn by the Sea from Thanksgiving through New Year’s.
Community and Inn guests are invited to exchange warm mittens, scarves, hats or Chap Stick for student ornaments. The collected clothing will be distributed to local food banks. $10 bookmarks, decorated by Memorial Middle School students may be purchased to buy school books from a list provided by teachers, for the school’s reading program.
Inn by the Sea will issue a $20 gift certificate* to each donor of warm clothes as a thank you, valid in the SPA or Sea Glass at Inn by the Sea, January 2 through June 13, 2014.
The warm clothes collected are distributed locally to food banks, schools, and Preble Street Chapel by project G.R.A.C.E. (Granting Resources and Assistance through Community Effort), a Scarborough based agency that provides assistance to residents of Southern Maine.
South Portland School Department business partnership director Jane Eberle has worked for several years to team Inn by the Sea with students from Mahaney Middle School and Memorial Middle Schools’ REACH and Connection programs, students at Brown Elementary School, and South Portland High School’s Interact Club to create handmade holiday ornaments.
The inviting book marks are colorfully crafted around book themes, and 100% of the proceeds from the purchased bookmarks go to buy school books. In 2011 and 2013 Inn by the Sea sold enough bookmarks to provide over 200 school books from the school lists.
“We appreciate this opportunity to work with Jane Eberle, Project G.R.A.C.E. and local students during the holiday season,” stated Sara Masterson, General Manger at Inn by the Sea. “Our staff and guests really enjoy giving back to the community in such a personal way. “
